Differin for Hormonal Acne for Women in 30’s and 40’s

I’ve been using PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash, Maximum Strength 10% Benzoyl Peroxide, for over 10 years. A full decade. My dermatologist prescribed it as an over-the-counter solution. Face. Neck. Shoulders. Upper back. If it could break out, it grabbed that foaming cleanser and got to latherin’.

I’ve had acne since fourth grade. Fourth. Grade. And if you’ve followed my skincare journey over the last few years, you’ve seen the not-so-subtle shift. Sure, it’s not perfect. But the progress is so profound that it’s hard not to give myself a pat on my much smoother back. It’s takin’ the right mix of products, treatments, discipline, and a little humility. Because treating hormonal acne for women in 30’s and 40’s is not the same game we played at 16. It’s more layered and more stubborn – more tied to stress, cycles, hormones, and just…well… life.

I’m on a mission around hormonal acne for women in 30’s and 40’s – as a skincare coach who still breaks out, but who has come a long way. This isn’t theory for me. It’s a lived experience.

And then there’s my brother. Twenty-one years younger (Yes, really). A couple of years ago, I was visiting him and saw CeraVe Acne Foaming Cream Cleanser in his shower with 4% benzoyl peroxide. I clocked it immediately. Sure, it was a different strength and brand, but it was in the same ingredient family with the same mission. And it hit me: how many solid options are out there that I just haven’t tested because I’ve been loyal to my PanOxyl 10% ride-or-die?

So I decided to branch out and go on a little Peroxide adventure (yes, adventures are a lot less exciting when you get older - let me have this!)

My first passport stamp on this Peroxide train was Differin Cleanse 10% Maximum Strength Acne Foaming Cleanser. And while in Rome, I figured I might as well roam around more of the Differin line and see what the fuss was about.

I remember the Differin commercials from high school in the early 2000s (yes, I’m in my 40’s, remember?). Back then, we were a Clearasil household. That felt premium at the drugstore. Differin sat at a slightly different price tier back then, and I never crossed over. It’s much more accessible now.

Honestly? I wish I had tried it then. I didn’t venture into Benzoyl Peroxide for acne until the Proactiv craze, and I was in my early 20’s and stretched those products out more than I should have. Mostly, for budgetary reasons.

Below, I’m breaking down how each product performed on my Differin journey; Specifically through the lens of hormonal acne for women in 30’s and 40’s, because that’s the lane I care about most as a skincare coach and a woman with acne in my early 40’s myself.

This is me during covid, when I decided to go full-force into my skincare journey.

Two Years Later!!

After DECADES of trying every product, service, and fad… I finally figured out what worked for me. This is a no-makeup shot without filters.

Now back to the Differin review…

Differin Cleanse 10% Maximum Strength Acne Foaming Cleanser

This cleanser is comparable to my PanOxyl Acne Foaming Wash in many ways. It’s 10% benzoyl peroxide, a maximum OTC strength, so it’s here to kill acne-causing bacteria fast and stop a breakout from turning into a full calendar event. The texture is cream-to-foam, and the brand leans into “deep cleanse without stripping.” PanOxyl can feel a tad more aggressive because it uses stronger foaming surfactants. I definitely get that squeaky-clean, oil-free moment after use, which can feel productive… unless you don’t moisturize properly, and then your skin starts to overproduce oil due to that post-tightness.

Differin’s 10% cleanser is built on a creamier base. It includes humectants like glycerin and more barrier-conscious support, so while it’s still killing acne-causing bacteria, it’s not simultaneously auditioning to dry out your 38-year-old cheekbones.

Managing hormonal acne for women in 30’s and 40’s? That nuance matters. At this stage, we’re not just clearing breakouts – we’re protecting collagen, hyluronic acid, maintaining barrier health, and avoiding that dull, overly dry look.

PanOxyl gets in and gets the job done for sure.

Differin does the job… but with a little more emotional intelligence and grace that we expect to gain with age.

Differin 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Spot Treatment

The Differin 10% Benzoyl Peroxide Spot Treatment is a go-to “emergency meeting” product. It has 10% benzoyl peroxide (just like the cleanser) in a spot format, designed for pop-up pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, and Differin claims it can visibly reduce size and redness after 1 day. A pretty big claim when you have that important meeting or event coming up.

On hormonal acne, it’s not subtle – it goes straight for the bacteria + inflammation piece. The tradeoff is the classic peroxide reality: dryness, irritation, and the need to moisturize like you mean it. Compared to other spot treatments in this category (you know the ones…you’ve tried them all), this one is straightforward: high-strength, fast-acting, not here to be elegant but here to be effective when your chin decides to reenact puberty.

Differin Gel 0.1% Adapalene

If benzoyl peroxide is the firefighter, adapalene is city planning. Differin Gel is a topical retinoid that helps normalize skin cell turnover so pores don’t keep clogging up. It’s not an overnight win—it can take up to ~12 weeks, and yes, the early “is this getting worse?” phase is real for some people with the skin-purging effects. This is the case with any retinoid, including prescription-strength Retin-A. If you’re unable to obtain an Rx for Retin-A for any reason, adapalene is a great alternative. Curology has been known to use adapalene in their customizable Rx’s for patients, too. Side note, this could be another option for prescription retinoids at a fraction of the cost.

Back to the main-stage, Differin Gel 0.1% Adapalene for hormonal acne for women in their 30s and 40s, it’s the product that’s doing long-game work: fewer new blockages, less chaos over time, and bonus points because adapalene can also help with photoaging signs like texture/fine lines (while you still wear sunscreen like the sun is buring you when you don’t think so…because it is!).

Differin Restorative Night Moisturizer (discontinued but swappable - read on)

The Differin Restorative Night Moisturizer was my “I’m doing the retinoid thing, but I still want to look like a functioning adult” moisturizer. It’s built for the Differin lifestyle: hyaluronic acid, ceramides, niacinamide, allantoin — aka hydration, barrier support, and “please calm down” energy in one pump. For hormonal acne for women in 30’s and 40’s, using Differin on this specific type of hormonal acne, cushioning matters, because adapalene can come on strong before it starts working effectively. It didn’t clog me, it didn’t sting, and it played well with active nights when my chin was acting like it pays rent. Now, did I feel like I wanted a little more? Yes. I put this on after my Magic Molecule spray that I use every night, and topped it with one of my favorite hyaluronic acid moisturizers, but I used half as much.

The Differin Restorative Night Moisturizer has been discontinued, but I found a swappable moisturizer in the same price point, with virtually the same ingredients. Read below.

Differin Restorative Night Moisturizer Discontinued. Swap for Cetaphil Night Cream Redness Relieving Night Moisturizer.

If you’ve been a fan of the Differin Restorative Night Moisturizer, and you’re bummed to see it disappear off the shelves, you’re not alone. For women using Differin for hormonal acne for women in 30’s and 40’s, barrier support isn’t optional – it’s an absolute must. The discontinued Differin Restorative Night Moisturizer worked because it combined ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid to hydrate, calm irritation, and reinforce skin stressed by adapalene or benzoyl peroxide. The Cetaphil Night Cream Redness Relieving Night Moisturizer follows a very similar blueprint. It includes ceramides, niacinamide, and hyaluronic acid, plus soothing ingredients like allantoin, licorice extract, caffeine, and vitamin E to reduce visible redness and support recovery. Also, both Differin and Cetaphil are owned by Galderma, a pharma-skincare company. While not identical, it’s a strong functional replacement that delivers comparable hydration, calming benefits, and barrier repair without heaviness or pore congestion.

Learn from my lesson…Benzoyl peroxide doesn’t just kill acne bacteria. It also quietly ruins clothes.

Ask me how I know. I’ have a few pillowcases with head-shaped centers bleached out.

If you’re using peroxide washes or spot treatments for hormonal acne for women in 30’s and 40’s, be warned: towels, pillowcases, collars – they will bleach. Use white linens, or simply wash after you wash with a peroxide product. Yes, double wash. If you want to keep this easy, you can use dermatologist-approved Cetaphil Face Cleanser.
