Haus Apéritif Review: Low ABV Alcohol Spirits Subscription & Delivery

I discovered Haus Apéritif on Instagram with one of those targeted ads that know me oh so well. I decided to try a sampler box, and I took a gamble on ordering two other Haus flavors including the Haus Bitter Clove and the Haus Ginger Yuzu for $35 each. My husband and I had to get a couple gifts for friends for the Holidays, and well, 2020 just seemed like the year to gift alcohol. Here’s my Haus Aperitif Review!

When the boxes arrived, they were packaged well. The Haus sampler kit for $40 came with 4 small bottles that I will surely repurpose as olive oil bottles or a small vase. When I purchased the Haus Sampler Kit, I wasn’t able to curate the bottles I received. You can now select which bottles you would like to receive.

All in all, I’ve had the opportunity to sample Haus Citrus Flower, Haus Lemon Lavender, Haus Rose Rosé, Haus Ginger Yuzu and Haus Bitter Clove. The only flavor I didn’t like was the Rose Rosé. I absolutely loved the Ginger Yuzu and the Bitter Clove. Luckily, based on hunch alone I purchased large bottles of my two favorites in my initial purchase.

It did take an additional 2 weeks to receive the Ginger Yuzu. I reached out to Haus and they were very quick to respond and said that it’s their most popular flavor. We ended up giving Haus Ginger Yuzu to our friends in San Diego.

We gifted the Haus Bitter Clove to my Sister-in-Law and Brother-in-Law and they loved it. My Sister-in-Law is a renowned Sommelier at one of the most respected wineries in Napa, CA and I’m always nervous to give her anything wine and spirits related. I felt confident that Haus would be a great gift. I was right. We visited for Thanksgiving (all of us took COVID tests in advance FYI) and the Haus bottle was almost finished by the time we left at the end of the weekend.

I did learn something interesting about Haus Apéritif from my Sister-in-Law. She informed me that apéritifs are virtually vermouth. In countries like Spain, vermouth is drank as the primary liquor in a cocktail, or often on its own. In the US and Canada, we think of vermouth as the spirit that’s secondary to another liquor in a cocktail like a martini.

If you want to double down on relaxation, you can also try Haus Aperitif with a CBD sparkler. Check out two reviews I’ve done, both HERE and HERE. This makes a mild spritzer like cocktail with a chill CBD element and a little natural flavoring. I also recommend a nice Kombucha.

I did a little more research after learning about apéritifs and vermouths, and this is what I learned… Vermouth is actually an aperitif wine and it’s name comes from the former primary ingredient in vermouth, wormwood. In German, wormwood is pronounced, Wermut.

Apéritif wines originated as fortified wines that were served before a meal as an appetite stimulant. Aperitifs are often bittersweet and herbal and flavored with botanicals, such as aromatic herbs, roots, and barks. If you’re interested in learning more on this topic, visit this site. Aperitif is a French word, and oh is it so fun to say! Other aperitifs include European favorites like Campari, Dubonnet and Lillet.

The average wine ranges between 13% to 15% ABV (alcohol by volume). Hard liquors like Gin and Vodka usually hover around 40 ABV, give or take a few percentage points. Haus Apéritif is 18% ABV. This makes haus stronger than wine by ABV by a few percent.

How should you drink Haus Apéritif? In my recommendation and Haus Aperitif review, you should have it over the rocks on ice BUT as we mentioned before that Haus is virtually a herbaceous vermouth, you can mix Haus into a cocktail or into a martini. You can absolutely get creative with more citrus and herb notes with your at-home bartending skills.

As someone that Recruited for frog Design, I can’t leave this review without talking about the sexy branding and design of Haus. Whomever they hired for design has a very specific vision of 70’s shag carpeting, dark cherry wood teak coffee tables, orange rocks glasses, gritty picture filters, and hipsters galore. It all just sucks me in and makes me want to be a part of that Haus Party!

The company seems to be family owned by a third generation winery family in Sonoma, CA. I love supporting California companies, and original risk takers that go against the grain. I’m sure the land in Sonoma could yield great wine (and maybe they make wine too) but they decided to get creative and delve into another business. Yes, still in the spirits space, but going away from wine in the third generation was risky. I think it’s paying off.

Final Thoughts on My Haus Aperitif Review…

Is Haus Apéritif going to be my everyday drink? No. I’m still a pinot noir gal at heart. But, when I want a cocktail after sharing that bottle of wine… Haus. When I want one simple drink on the rocks… Haus. A splash in a herbaceous cocktail… Haus. You get the picture. I hope you enjoyed my Haus Aperitif Review… I’ve since become an affiliate because I love their aperitifs so much!
